Song of the Day: Curtis Mayfield, “Get Down”

Continuing our “funk of the day” week…

Curtis Mayfield, “Get Down” (1971) – from the album Roots, his second solo album

Curtis Lee Mayfield (June 3, 1942 – December 26, 1999) was an American soul, rhythm and blues, and funk singer, songwriter, and record producer best known for his anthemic music with The Impressions and composing the soundtrack to the blaxploitation film Super Fly. From these works and others, he is highly regarded as a pioneer of funk and of politically conscious African-American music. He was also a multi-instrumentalist who played the guitar, bass, piano, saxophone, and drums. (via Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.)

I was a huge “Soul Train” fan when I was a kid – no surprises there – and, yes, I would try to dance along with the Soul Train dancers on the TV. Of course, TVs back then were smaller than now, generally, and ours was small even for the time, so it was a bit of a challenge, and I was white (actually still am) so another challenge… But I love that there are songs and dance sequences from “Soul Train” available on YouTube…

Oh - and hello to Jason Isaacs.

The 400 Blows

zerode

is an over-caffeinated and under-employed grad school dropout, aspiring leftwing intellectual and cultural studies academic, cinéaste, and former poet. Raised in San Francisco on classic film, radical politics, burritos and soul music, then set loose upon the world. He spends his time in coffee shops with his laptop and headphones, caffeinating and trying to construct a post-whatever life.

What's in a name... The handle "zerode" is a contraction of Zéro de Conduite, the title of Jean Vigo's 1933 movie masterpiece about schoolboy rebellion.
